Chapter 9
Free.
Mia struggled to keep her attention on the road and her focus on why she was behind the wheel, but her mind insisted on repeating the far from simple word. A few hours ago sheâd been at Calebâs disposal. What he wanted to do to her he did and what he wanted from her, he gotâas witnessed by the lingering soreness in her pussy.
After theyâd made love, heâd told her to take a shower. As a result, she now smelled of lavender. Sheâd been able to wash away his essence, which had to help when it came to recovering her equilibrium. At least thatâs what she kept telling herself. She had on what sheâd been wearing back when heâd convinced her to follow him to Korbinâs place, but heâd washed her outfit while she was in the shower. Wrapped in an oversized towel, sheâd waited for her clothes to dry in what she assumed was the living room. Sheâd stared at the TV, straining to hear him talking in an adjacent room.
Finally, although her garments were still slightly damp, sheâd gotten dressed. Then, determined to chance it, sheâd dug in her purse for her keys and headed for and then through the front door. During the nerve-racking walk sheâd steeled herself for the sound of him ordering her back into the cage.
Instead heâd followed her outside.
âChange of plans,â heâd said as she slid behind the wheel. âI donât want you after all.â
Donât want. Dismissed. âToo bad you couldnât have come to that conclusion before you know what happened.â
âI couldnât anticipate how things were going to play out.â Heâd reached through the open window and ran his knuckles over the side of her neck. âAre you going to charge me with abduction?â
âI havenât decided.â
âDonât. More than youâll ever understand rides on keeping your mouth shut.â
âWhy?â
âIâm not in a position to say.â
Fighting weariness and something she didnât want to admit, she now stared at the street ahead of her. Some twenty-four hours had passed since Caleb had left her with too many questions and the conviction that he wasnât finished with her.
Whether he believed he needed to discipline her some more or wanted to see what she was like in bed didnât matter today. Hopefully sheâd soon see her brother.
Free.
Her mind numb following a mostly sleepless night, she pulled into the parking lot of a casual restaurant. When sheâd reached him last night, he hadnât insisted she explain why she wanted them to get together in a down on its heels neighborhood. There was no need because this wasnât the first time theyâd met there.
To her relief, his beater was already parked on the opposite side of the restaurant from the street. She chose a slot a fair distance from him that was behind a large truck and trailer bearing the name of a grocery chain.
It was just getting light, an ungodly hour for her brother to be up but the only time she had before going to work. As she entered the old building, the aroma of coffee and cinnamon had her lifting her head in anticipation.
